Message from the Principal
Greetings, Students, Parents, and Community:
With immense excitement and anticipation, I welcome you to the Alfred Rush Academy
(ARA) for the 2023-24 school year!
ARA is home to four programs designed to promote student growth academically, socially, and emotionally; Rise Academy, Return to Learn, Graduate Florence Academy (GFA), Pace’s Reach program, and Clinical Day. These programs help motivated, independent learners earn accelerated course credits and are perfect for learners who work best in a smaller classroom environment.
From the time of enrollment, every decision is to promote student success by tailoring a plan to meet students’ needs. We serve students who have experienced past barriers to teaching and learning that have resulted in low academic self-esteem, low social esteem, or related services that may have impacted or hindered the learning process. This tailored plan for student success is the direct result of a collaborative effort between the student,
parent(s)/guardian(s), school personnel, and community stakeholders.
The faculty and staff at ARA are dynamic, reflective practitioners with growth mindsets toperfect their craft of teaching and learning. We value our community and seek to provide a rich, supportive, and joyful school environment. Our teachers can teach anywhere, but
they’ve decided to join the Alfred Rush Academy family.
Again, welcome to THE Alfred Rush Academy, the home of the Phoenix!

Before becoming the principal of Alfred Rush Academy, Mr. Woodberry served as a Social Studies teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal with the Marion County School District. “I am honored to serve as the Director of the Rush Academy. We will be in the business of redirecting and empowering our students. Thank you to the Florence 1 Schools Board of Education, Dr. O’Malley, Mr. Hall, and the Rush Academy community for the opportunity.”
Mrs. Lisa Barber
Mrs. Lisa Barber is originally from Flint, Michigan, and moved to Florence to attend Francis Marion University where she earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology. She then received her Master’s degree in Counseling from Webster University. Mrs. Barber has been working with the Clinical Day Program since 2001. Our program was first located on Highway 52 near Florence Darlington Technical College, where, shortly after, the program moved to a location on Irby St. For 20 years, the Clinical Day Program was housed in the James F Reames Center on National Cemetery Road. At the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, the program transitioned to the lower wing of Alfred Rush Academy.
“I live by the motto: You must be the change you wish to see in the world by Mahatma Gandhi.”
I am excited to continue our Clinical Day Program in partnership with Alfred Rush Academy.
Our History
Our History
On December 13, 2012, at a Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees meeting, Mrs. Pat Gibson-Hye Moore made a motion to name the former Byrnes School (which the district had purchased) after Alfred Rush. Board member Alexis D. Pipkins, Sr. seconded the motion. The motion carried by unanimous vote.
Alfred Rush (d. 1876) was an African-American state representative who served for two terms during Reconstruction. Despite being born into slavery and facing social challenges as a person of mixed-race, Rush represented what was then Darlington County in the S.C. House from 1868-70 and again from 1874-76, and was also a deacon at Savannah Grove Baptist Church.
On March 14, 2014, the South Carolina House of Representatives adopted a bill in memory of Alfred Rush’s efforts to bring about free public education for all in South Carolina. A historical marker in Florence County memorializes his life and death.
